Donald Trump has once again stated he would influence FIFA to pull 2026 World Cup matches from a venue based on the local political climate, with Boston now being the third targeted location to face such statements from the US president. Furthermore, Trump remarked he would consider similar action against Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympics due to perceived safety issues.

Even though Trump does not have official jurisdiction to directly relocate either competition, he may exert influence the organizing committees managing each event to shift host cities.

Context of Remarks

These statements were made during a media briefing with Javier Milei, who was present in the executive mansion following the disclosure of a $20 billion financial assistance for the Argentine economy. Toward the close of the meeting, a journalist questioned Trump about a latest public disturbance in downtown Boston where law enforcement were assaulted and a cruiser was set on fire. The correspondent also questioned if such events could lead to the revocation of organizing rights for the larger soccer tournament.

“We could take them away,” the former president remarked concerning the World Cup games, scheduled to be hosted at the Massachusetts arena. “Their mayor is poor … she is extremist, and they’re dominating sections of Boston. That’s a significant claim, right?”

“When a city is failing, and I believe there are unsafe conditions, I'd call the organization's president, who is excellent, and tell him we should relocate it to an alternate venue,” Trump stated on Tuesday. “And he would do that. He wouldn’t love to do it, but he’d do it. Readily, he'd comply.”

Political Connections

FIFA President has been open his strategies to be publicly aligned with Trump ahead of the upcoming World Cup, scheduled to be hosted in numerous American venues across the US along with several in the northern neighbor and three in the southern neighbor.
