United Nations Lifts Penalties on President of Syria Before White House Visit
United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a US resolution ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his Washington trip next week.
Sharaa was named provisional head of state following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that drove out the previous leader in winter 2024, ending thirteen long years of internal conflict.
The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" since Assad was deposed.
Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions in his role as head of the religious organization the HTS movement, once connected to the terrorist network. The US removed HTS from a list of global extremist entities this past July.
Additional Sanctions Relief
The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of these restrictions, posting on social media: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and allied countries for their support of Syria and its people."
Imminent Washington Talks
The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week follows American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.
The pair met initially during May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through the region.
Following that encounter, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.
Prior United States Journey
Monday's visit does not represent Sharaa's first trip to the US during this period. During September, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the global assembly in New York after approximately sixty years.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position across international circles" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
